Help Support Northern Spark
On March 20, 2019 the sun will set at 7:16 pm. That is 1 hour and 45 minutes earlier than sunset on the night of Northern Spark, which will take place 124,817 minutes later on June 14th and 15th. Yes, we are counting the minutes.
As we move from the season of dark, deep winter to the brighter days of spring, join us for a newly conceived “launch party” and Spring Howl for Northern Spark, an evening filled with indoor art installations, a silent auction, drinks and eats to support one of your favorite summertime events.
Advance tickets: $25, includes free Fulton beer and soft drinks
At the door: $30
Add a sauna to your pre-/post-Howl! $15 for 30 minutes ($40 total)
March 20, 5:30 – 8 pm.
Spring Howl led by SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE at 7:16 pm.
Sweat It Out at Spring Howl
We’re excited to announce that Spring Howl has a mobile hot spot! A sauna, of course. Little Box Sauna was conceived, designed, built and deployed in 2015 as an experimental Creative Placemaking project in Bloomington’s South Loop. It is currently tucked in a snowbank outside of The Holden Room and its fire will be stoked on March 20th. Enjoy a sauna during Spring Howl by reserving a 30 minute space to share with others on the bench.
Artists at Spring Howl
Artists who have worked with Northern Lights in the past – and in the future – will light up the room with these works:
Kashimana Ahua and Filsan Ibrahim, Applause Posse. One of Northern Spark 2018’s most crowd-pleasing performances returns! Let Kashimana and Filsan sing praises for you, a loved one or a total stranger. At least one Applause Posse recipient will be selected through our silent auction.
Dream the Combine, Barely Holding It All Together. Test your balance on this long beam. Jennifer Newsom and Tom Carruthers recently presented Hide and Seek at the MOMA Young Architects Program and presented The World Is Rated X at Northern Spark 2013. Jennifer is on the Northern Lights.mn Board.
Andrea Johnson, Little Box Sauna, is a member of MINN_LAB, which presented projects at Northern Spark 2014-2016 and won the 2017 Creative City Challenge.
Michael Murnane, Under Ice. First seen at Northern Spark 2012, this large scale projection was conceived by the artist as an homage to hours spent ice fishing with his father every year. Michael also lit up the facade of the Landmark Center at Northern Spark 2011.
SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE, Spring Howl for Northern Spark. At 7:25 pm join rapper, spoken word artist, and social justice activist SEE MORE PERSPECTIVE in a collective howl for Northern Spark. Bring on spring! SEE MORE is on the Northern Lights.mn Program Council.
Piotr Szyhalski, Living Banners. In the deep winter of 2017, Piotr “wrapped” 8 blocks of Nicollet Mall with his hand-printed banners, featuring words such as “cold, breath, city, hope” that left passersby to construct personal narratives as they walked down the street. Piotr has presented projects at Northern Spark in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017 and is a Co-Director of Art(ists) on the Verge.
